What does this error mean?
If Azimuth shows the following message, it cannot load one of the native helper files needed to start Forza Horizon 2:
text
An Azimuth file is missing or was blocked by Windows or security software.
Cannot load the native static-TLS helperOne common cause is a missing or replaced `azimuth-tls.dll` file. Older mod versions sometimes replaced this file to load their own code. If Windows Security quarantines that replacement, the helper can disappear and Azimuth will no longer launch correctly.
However, the message does not prove that Windows Defender deleted the file. It can also indicate an incomplete extraction, a corrupted DLL, a mod incompatibility, or a file blocked by another security feature.
Recommended fix: Restore the original Azimuth helper from the official Azimuth download, test the launcher without the problematic mod, and then install an updated compatible version. Do not disable Windows Defender or add broad antivirus exclusions.
Step 1 — Close Azimuth and back up your files
•Close both Forza Horizon 2 and Azimuth.
•Open the folder containing azimuth.exe.
•Make a backup of your existing data directory before changing anything. It can include your save files and settings.
•If you used mods that replace the TLS helper, make a separate backup of their installed files as well.
Step 2 — Check the native helper
Look inside Azimuth's data/bin folder:
text
Azimuth/
├── azimuth.exe
└── data/
├── bin/
│ └── azimuth-tls.dll
└── [other Azimuth data and saves]Confirm whether `azimuth-tls.dll` exists. If it is missing, Azimuth cannot load that helper. If the DLL exists but a mod replaced it, the file may be incompatible or blocked.
Important: Seeingazimuth-tls.dllin this directory is not proof that it is the original Azimuth file. Some third-party mods install their own DLL using exactly the same filename. Also look for files such asazimuth-tls-next.dll, which may indicate a modded DLL loading chain. Do not delete unknown files without checking which mod installed them.
Step 3 — Restore the original file from Azimuth
1. Open the official Azimuth download page.
2. Download a fresh copy of Azimuth for Windows (the official azimuth-windows.zip; this guide targets 0.9.10).
3. Open the ZIP archive and find its original data/bin/azimuth-tls.dll.
4. Back up the existing helper in your installation if it is present.
5. Extract the original helper from the official archive to the same data/bin location beside your other Azimuth data files.
6. Launch Azimuth without the mod that replaced the helper, and check whether the error is gone.
Do not download a random azimuth-tls.dll from a DLL download site or use a file supplied by an unknown Discord user. You need the clean file belonging to the same Azimuth version.
If the clean helper still does not work
Make a separate clean Azimuth installation by extracting the entire official archive into a new folder. Test it before adding third-party DLL mods. Keep the original installation and its data directory as a backup; do not blindly overwrite saves.
Step 4 — Check Windows Defender's protection history
Windows Security can quarantine suspicious DLLs. To find out whether that happened:
•Open Windows Security.
•Go to Virus & threat protection.
•Choose Protection history.
•Inspect recent detections and look for a matching file path or filename, particularly azimuth-tls.dll.
•Note the detection name and exact location. Do not assume the file is safe just because a game mod uses it.
If the detected file came from an old mod that replaced the Azimuth helper, leave the suspicious copy in quarantine and use the clean original Azimuth download to restore the launcher instead.
If the antivirus also flags the untouched helper from the official download, stop and verify the source. Contact the Azimuth developer or submit the suspected false positive for review. Do not turn off real-time protection just to make the game launch.
Windows Defender alerts are not automatically false positives. The Extra Options community documented detections affecting older modded azimuth-tls.dll builds, and the mod developer later changed the installation method. This is one reason why a clean Azimuth helper is the preferred recovery method.Step 5 — Update Extra Options to the new winmm.dll version
Earlier Extra Options releases for Azimuth replaced `data/bin/azimuth-tls.dll`. The newer v0.2.88+ builds for Azimuth 0.9.10 switched to `winmm.dll`, installed in the main launcher folder instead.
Once the clean base game launches again:
•Download the current Extra Options release from the developer's official GitHub releases.
•Check that the release supports Azimuth 0.9.10.
•Extract the files inside the archive's `Azimuth` directory into the folder containing azimuth.exe.
•The new loader, winmm.dll, should be next to `azimuth.exe`, not inside data/bin.
•Leave Azimuth's restored original `data/bin/azimuth-tls.dll` in place.
•Do not install an old TLS-replacement release on top of the new winmm.dll package.

What if another mod needs to replace azimuth-tls.dll?
Other mods may still use a custom DLL or chain loader at the same path. Installing multiple replacements over one another can break the load order.
•Check the exact mod release and its compatibility with your Azimuth version.
•Back up the original helper before adding any new DLL-based mod.
•If the launcher stops working after installing a specific mod, remove that mod using its official uninstall instructions, restore the original helper, and test again.
•Do not rename random DLLs or force several incompatible versions into the same folder.
Step 6 — If nothing fixes it
Collect these details before requesting support:
•Your Azimuth version (for example, 0.9.10).
•Which FH2 mods you installed and their versions.
•Whether data/bin/azimuth-tls.dll is present.
•Whether the error occurs in a clean Azimuth installation.
•Any related Windows Security detection name (if there is one).
•The error screenshot and the relevant Azimuth log, usually `data/logs/azimuth.log`. Review logs for personal paths or identifiers before sharing.

Quick checklist
•1. Close the launcher and back up Azimuth data.
•2. Check data/bin/azimuth-tls.dll.
•3. Restore the original DLL from the official Azimuth 0.9.10 ZIP.
•4. Check Windows Security Protection history without disabling antivirus protection.
•5. Test Azimuth without mods.
•6. Reinstall only compatible mods, such as the newer Extra Options `winmm.dll` version.
Bottom line: You usually do not need to reinstall Forza Horizon 2 itself. Start by repairing Azimuth's original TLS helper and removing the conflicting mod loader.
